List of Important Lakes in India

There are no formal definitions or scientific criteria differentiating the two, but ponds and lakes are both water-filled basins on land, albeit ponds are often bigger and deeper. Natural lakes are typically found in hilly regions, dormant volcanic craters, rift zones, and regions where glacial is still occurring (e.g., alpine lakes). Such lakes can be found in low-lying areas or beside mature rivers when a river channel has extended over a basin created by marshes and floodplains that have been eroded.
