AP High Court Civil Judge Eligibility Criteria 2026

A law degree is the core requirement for both routes. Only Indian citizens can apply.

Direct Recruitment

  • Law graduates who obtained their law degree preceding one year as on the notification date are eligible. This follows the Supreme Court judgment in Bhumika Trust vs Union of India (WP (Civil) No. 1110/2025, dated 21.08.2026) and pending amendments to the AP State Judicial Rules, 2026.
  • The candidate must be of good character and free from any infirmity that makes them unfit for the post.
  • Direct Recruitment is for persons not in the service of the Government of India or the State.

Recruitment by Transfer

Candidates need a law degree from a university established by law in India and must be a confirmed member or approved probationer in one of these categories:

  1. High Court of AP staff: Section Officers, Court Officers, Court Masters, Personal Secretaries, Assistant Section Officers, Computer Operators, U.D. Stenographers, Assistants, Typists, Copyists and similar posts.
  2. District Judiciary of AP: Chief Administrative Officers, Superintendents, Stenographers Grade I–III, Senior and Junior Assistants, Typists.
  3. AP Prosecution Services: Assistant Public Prosecutors, Senior APPs, Additional PPs Grade-II.
  4. Section Officers in the Law Department of the AP Secretariat.
  5. Section Officers in the AP Legislature Department.
  6. Managers in the offices of the Advocate General, Government Pleaders and Public Prosecutors, and the Editor, I.L.R. of AP.

Candidates facing disciplinary charges or undergoing punishment are not eligible under this route.

Who Is Not Eligible

Candidates are disqualified if they were dismissed or compulsorily retired from government or judicial service, convicted of an offence involving moral turpitude, debarred by the High Court, UPSC or any State PSC, found of doubtful integrity, or in a bigamous marriage.

AP High Court Civil Judge Application Fee 2026

The fee is Rs. 1,500 for OC, EWS and BC candidates and Rs. 750 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates.

The concessional Rs. 750 fee applies to SC/ST candidates only if their community is recognized as SC/ST in Andhra Pradesh. The fee is paid online and is not refunded, even if the application is rejected or the notification is cancelled.

AP High Court Civil Judge Selection Process and Exam Pattern 2026

The final merit list is based on 250 marks: Paper I (100) + Paper II (100) + Viva Voce (50). The screening test and Paper III are qualifying only.

  1. Screening Test (CBT) – shortlists candidates at a 1:10 ratio to vacancies; minimum 40% needed.
  2. Written Examination – three descriptive papers, answered in English (except the translation part).
  3. Viva Voce – candidates called at a 1:3 ratio per category; absence means disqualification.
  4. Document verification of originals, followed by verification of antecedents.

In Paper III, Part I tests translation from English to Telugu and Telugu to English. Part II is an essay on a legal subject. If two candidates tie, the older candidate is preferred, then higher qualification, then higher marks in the qualifying degree.

AP Civil Judge Salary, Training and Exam Centres

The regular pay scale is Rs. 77,840 – 1,36,520, but selected candidates first complete two years of training and clerkship at half that remuneration.

Training and Probation

  1. Year 1 – Judicial Academy: Selected candidates join as Trainee Judicial Officers for one year of compulsory training, paid a fixed emolument equal to half a Civil Judge’s remuneration.
  2. Year 2 – Law Clerkship: Six months under a Principal District/District and Sessions Judge or Higher Judicial Service member, then six months under a High Court Judge, at the same emolument.
  3. Regular appointment: After a satisfactory evaluation report, the trainee is appointed to the regular post with full pay scale and benefits.

Screening Test Exam Centres

Candidates must choose three centres in order of preference: Guntur, Kurnool, Rajahmundry (Rajamahendravaram), Tirupati, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. The High Court may allot a different centre, and change requests will not be accepted. Written exam venues will be announced after the screening result.
