National Human Rights Commission Internship 2026

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), under its mandate to promote human rights literacy under Section 12(h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, has announced its flagship internship programmes for 2026. These programmes are designed to provide practical exposure and awareness about human rights protection and promotion to students across India.

The Commission regularly conducts two structured internship programmes: a four-week Summer/Winter In-Person Internship and a two-week Online Short-Term Internship (OSTI). Applications are invited from eligible students of UGC-recognized universities.

NHRC Internship Vacancy 2026

The NHRC selects approximately 80 interns for each of its internship programmes. The total intake across the Summer, Winter, and OSTI cycles can be estimated at around 160 vacancies or more per year.

NHRC Internship 2026 Eligibility

The eligibility criteria differ slightly for the two programmes. All applicants must be enrolled in regular courses at UGC-recognized universities.

A. For Summer/Winter In-Person Internship (4 Weeks):

Educational Qualifications (Any one of the following):

  • Law Students: Pursuing 2nd/3rd year of 3-year LL.B. (after 1st year) OR 4th/5th year of 5-year integrated LL.B. (after 3 years/6th Semester).
  • LL.M. students.
  • PG Students: Final year students of PG Diploma in HR, MA Human Rights, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work (MSW), Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations, and other Social Sciences.

Minimum Marks: Must have secured 65% or above in Class XII and in all subsequent university semesters.

  1. Age Limit: Not more than 28 years.
  2. Exclusion: Students who have previously attended the regular one-month NHRC internship are not eligible.

B. For Online Short Term Internship (OSTI – 2 Weeks):

Educational Qualifications:

  • Students in 3rd year or beyond of any integrated 5-year PG course.
  • Students in 3rd/Final year of any graduation course.
  • Students in any semester/year of any Post-Graduate degree course (including 3-year LL.B.).
  • Students in any semester/year of any Post-Graduate diploma course.
  • Research Scholars in any stream.

Minimum Marks: Must have consistently secured 60% or above in Class XII and all subsequent university semesters/diploma courses.

Exclusion: Students who have previously attended the regular one-month NHRC internship are not eligible.

    NHRC Internship 2026 Selection Process

    The selection for both programmes is Merit-Based. No written examination is conducted.

    Merit Criteria: The total marks are calculated out of 100.

    • Class XII Percentage: 30 Marks
    • Graduation/Current Course Percentage: 40 Marks
    • Statement of Purpose (SOP): 30 Marks

    Statement of Purpose (SOP):

    • For In-Person Internship: A 300-500 word essay on “Reason for Joining as Intern in NHRC.”
    • For OSTI: A 250 word essay on the same topic.

    Preference: Given to candidates demonstrating research potential in Human Rights.

      The application process is completely online. Interested candidates must apply when the specific programme advertisement is live on the NHRC website.

      Steps to Apply Online:

      1. Visit the Official Website: Go to the National Human Rights Commission portal: https://nhrc.nic.in.
      2. Navigate to Internship Section: Find the ‘Internship’ tab or link on the homepage.
