IISc Bangalore Becomes India’s Only University in Global Top 100: THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026

The Times Higher Education THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026 have been released, and the results bring both pride and concern for India. While universities from the United States, the United Kingdom, and China continue to dominate global education, India has only one university in the global top 100. That university is the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. IISc Bangalore has emerged as India’s sole representative in the global top 100 across all subjects, highlighting its importance in Indian higher education.

What Are THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026?

The THE Subject Rankings evaluate universities based on specific academic subjects rather than overall performance. For the 2026 rankings, 11 subject areas were assessed, including Engineering, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, and others.

Universities are judged using 18 performance indicators, grouped into four main areas:

  • Teaching (learning environment)
  • Research (volume, income, and reputation)
  • Knowledge transfer (industry income)
  • International outlook (staff, students, and research)

Each subject has slightly different weightage depending on its nature. Only institutions that meet minimum standards for research output and faculty strength are included.

IISc Bangalore’s Performance in 2026

In the THE Subject Rankings 2026, IISc Bangalore ranked within the global top 100 in Computer Science. This achievement makes IISc the only Indian institution to reach this level in any subject this year.

This result confirms IISc’s strong reputation in science, technology, and research. Known for high-quality faculty, advanced research facilities, and international collaborations, IISc continues to be India’s leading institute in global rankings.

India’s Overall Performance at THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026

Apart from IISc Bangalore, India’s presence drops sharply in the rankings.

  • Amity University appeared in the 251–300 band for Computer Science.
  • Jamia Millia Islamia ranked in the 301–400 range.
  • Symbiosis International University and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology were also placed lower down the list.

No other Indian university featured in the global top 100 across the 11 subject areas. This shows that India’s global competitiveness is still limited to a very small number of elite institutions.

Global Leaders Continue to Dominate

The United States and the United Kingdom continued their dominance in the 2026 subject rankings.

  • The US secured first place in 8 out of 11 subjects.
  • The UK topped 3 subjects.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was the most successful university overall, leading in Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, and Social Sciences.
In Psychology, the University of Cambridge regained the top spot.

China’s Rapid Rise in Higher Education

China emerged as the strongest Asian performer in the 2026 rankings. Chinese universities claimed seven top-10 positions, an increase from last year.

  • Peking University entered the top 10 in Computer Science for the first time.
  • Tsinghua University reached the top 10 in Physical Sciences.

Overall, China now has 77 universities in the global top 100 across subjects, showing steady growth and strong government support for higher education.
