The IIT JAM 2025 exam follows a comprehensive pattern. Conducted online and exclusively in English, it spans a duration of three hours. The exam encompasses seven subjects and presents questions in varied formats: Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. In total, there are 60 questions, with each question carrying different weightage. For MCQs, each correct answer is awarded one mark, while for MSQs, it’s two marks per correct response. NAT questions may vary in their marking scheme, with either one or two marks per question.

What sets this exam apart is its approach to negative marking. While there is no penalty for incorrect answers in MSQs and NAT questions, MCQs follow a different rule. For every wrong response in MCQs, candidates lose 1/3 of a mark for one-mark questions and 2/3 of a mark for two-mark questions.

The exam is divided into three sections, each designed to test different aspects of the candidates’ knowledge. Section 1 comprises 30 MCQs, Section 2 consists of 10 MCQs, and Section 3 presents 20 NAT questions. In total, the exam is worth 100 marks, offering a comprehensive evaluation of candidates’ understanding and proficiency in their chosen subjects.
