Big news for Class 10 students in West Bengal. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has proposed pushing back the Madhyamik Pariksha 2027 by about two weeks. As per the new draft routine, the exams will be held from 2 March to 16 March 2027, instead of the earlier announced 15 to 25 February 2027.

The change has been proposed because of the Census 2027 enumeration work, scheduled in West Bengal from 25 January to 28 February 2027. A large number of school teachers, who also conduct and invigilate the Madhyamik exam, will be on Census duty during this period.

At the moment, this is only a proposal. WBBSE President Laltu Das has made it clear: “This is a proposal. Nothing has been finalised yet. As teachers who will conduct exams will have to be deployed for the enumeration exercise in February.” The draft has been sent to the state’s School Education Department for approval.
In this article, we explain the old and new dates, the proposed subject-wise routine, exam timings, the reason for the change and what students should do now.

Why Has WBBSE Proposed New Madhyamik Dates?
The main reason is the Census 2027 in West Bengal:
- The Census enumeration exercise is scheduled from 25 January to 28 February 2027.
- Teachers form a large part of the Census workforce as enumerators and supervisors.
- These same teachers are needed to conduct, invigilate and manage the Madhyamik exam centres.
- If the exams were held from 15 to 25 February, schools would face a serious shortage of staff.
To avoid this clash, the board drafted a new routine starting from 2 March, after the Census work ends, and sent it to the School Education Department. The final decision now rests with the state government.
What Should Madhyamik 2027 Students Do Now?
- Do not relax your preparation. The new dates are only a proposal, and the board could still go with the original February schedule.
- Prepare as if the exam starts in mid-February. If the March dates are approved, you simply get two extra weeks for revision.
- Keep checking official sources: wbbse.wb.gov.in and official board notices. Avoid relying on WhatsApp forwards.
- Note the subject order: The proposed routine puts the languages first and the science papers near the end. Plan your revision cycle accordingly.
- Stay ready for the test exam and practicals, which will be scheduled by schools and the board separately.
